The huge success of Tesla shifted the focus of automakers to the electric vehicle. Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, Volkswagen, GM are all currently working on their future electric vehicles.
Once EVs of these companies will be on road, all are going to have a big infrastructure issue of charging station.
And not only the charging station, people need something as fast as petrol station where you get your vehicle refueled within minutes.
Tesla has solved these issues but in the US only. If we want to save this planet from the grip of fossil fuels, we need to make EVs mainstream throughout the world and we can’t wait for these infrastructure issues to get solved which are rather expensive and are slow to implement.
What I want to say is: we need cheaper solutions for the time being especially for the developing countries where setting up such an infrastructure is a challenging task.
I was really delighted when I stumbled upon a patent application by NextEV, a subsidiary of NIO. Recently, NIO’s supercar EP9 breaks the world record of Germany’s Nurburgring race track.
The patent application discusses a method to recharge batteries of an EV on the move. A drone will be used for the same which you can summon when you feel you are running out of charge.
You can summon a drone using your smartphone. The summoned drone will hover over your car to recharge its battery.
The patent application says that the charging panel needs to be installed on a car roof for this method to work.
Also, the patent describes buddy charging, too. It’s similar to buddy refuel in aviation where an aircraft refuels another while flying.
Here a truck would be doing the similar job. The truck can be summoned just like the drone and the charging station inside the truck will recharge your vehicle.
